For plain fabrics you can use TTL mode on your flash to automatically set the flash power. On some flash models this is called E-TTL mode.
However, sometimes you may need to set the flash power manually:
- if the flash does not support TTL mode with your camera, or
- the flash does not have TTL mode.
If the material you are digitising is very shiny, then TTL mode may produce clipped photos. In this case we recommend using manual flash power.
- Take a test photo from directly above the Frame with the Frame filling the camera display

- Review the photo on your camera display
- Switch on the histogram display
- Press the INFO button (Canon or Nikon) or DISP button (Sony) to cycle through the display modes until the histogram appears
- On some cameras the histogram may need to be enabled via the MENU settings
- Check the histogram is about 2/3 from the right hand side (avoid clipping)

- Adjust the flash power, take another photo and re-check the histogram until it looks good
