We have broken the scanning process down into a few simple steps and the approximate time required for each step.
- Lay the fabric on a flat surface and position your scanning frame (available in a range of sizes) over the area of the fabric that you would like to digitise (~1 minute)
- Pattern repeats in different sizes only requires that you select a large enough scanning frame to cover at least one full repeat. There should not be any significant time added at this step to change between differently sized scanning frames. Fabric preparations are quite standard and you just need to make sure the fabric is clean with no folds or creases.
- Capture 9 or 25 images using your DSLR camera and flash while moving around the material, following the simple instructions provided in our training. The photos are captured handheld – no tripod or other equipment needed.
- 9 images (for basic fabrics with little complex reflection and texture) ~ 1,5 minutes
- 25 images (for more complex reflective surfaces and textures) ~ 2,5 – 3 minutes
- Tip – you can batch capture as many fabrics as you would like before moving to the next step. E.g. perform step 1 and 2 for 50 fabrics in one go, and then move to step 3.
- Upload the set of images to Bandicoot’s web app. You will have your own user profile on our website that can be used to upload, process and manage your PBR texture maps. You only need to drag-and-drop the image files directly over from the camera. No need for any photoshopping or adjustments before upload
- You can use Bandicoot’s batch upload tool to upload several sets of images in one go. E.g. if you captured 50 materials in step 1 and 2, you can now upload all 50 sets of images directly to the web app for processing.
- The upload process normally takes 2-3 minutes, depending on your internet connection speed.
- Process images to generate PBR texture maps. As soon as the image sets are uploaded, they will be processed in the cloud using Bandicoot’s proprietary texture generation process. Automatic tiling is included in this process.
- It will take about 2 hours to process a set of images to generate the PBR texture maps.
- Multiple scans can be processed simultaneously, so you don’t need to wait for each set to processed at the time.
- Preview and evaluate the output result directly in the web app gallery. All textures are colour calibrated according to Bandicoot’s 3-point colour calibration system (~1 minute)
- If you are happy with the result, unlock the material using 1 credit and download your texture maps in .zip or .u3ma file format. Texture maps can be downloaded tiled or untiled, depending on your preference.
- This step takes ~ 30 seconds
- Import texture maps directly into your 3D CAD of choice (CLO3D, Browzwear, Optitex, Style3D, Blender, Adobe Substance etc.)
